Face Lift (Rhytidectomy)
Face lift (Rhytidectomy) is a surgical method used for eliminating sagging and wrinkles due to aging by stretching and hanging in the face.
However, in recent years, all operations for aging in the face have become known under the name of facial rejuvenation. While people are getting older, the facial skin becomes sagging, wrinkled, and several stains and irregularities occur on it due to years, solar radiation, daily stress and other factors (smoking, drinking, poor diet). In an old facial skin, forehead lines have become apparent, the eyebrows have fallen, eyelids have become sagging, the bags and lines under the eyes have formed, deep lines around the mouth-nose area have formed, the cheeks have become sagging, the chin contour has disappeared, neck has become fatty, and layers of skin have formed. Also, skin has lost its vitality, the sunspots and other moles have formed on it, and it has become thin and wrinkled.
Face lift surgery, the one of the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery procedures is also called “facelift” or “rhytidectomy” with the statement from English. With face lift- facial rejuvenation surgeries, irregularities and sagging of the forehead, face and neck skin are removed, excess fat tissue is removed from cheed and neck; the face fascia and fat tissue are placed to their anatomical location, the facial tissues are reinforced, eyelids are corrected and other complementary operations can be done( such as skin-peeling, fillers and Botox.
Age for Operation
The ideal candidates for facelift surgery are those whose skin has started to sag, but not lost its elasticity, who have not had any other health problems. Generally, this surgery is applied for men and women over the age of 40. However, at the earlier age, this kind of surgeries can be done as full or limited due to structural and genetic reasons.
In the interview, your complaints and expectations after the operation are primarily evaluated.
During the facelift surgery, the aesthetics of the nose and eyelids, forehead correction, and eyebrow lift surgeries can be also added in order to make the nose more beautiful and younger. Injection of the fillers or peeling (mechanical, chemical, laser) for fine wrinkles (oil, hyaluronic acid, etc.), and Botox for wrinkles can be done.
When you decide for the operation, my assistant will plan the suitable day for operation.
Preparation for Operation
You should stop taking aspirin and its derivatives one week before the operation. (Do not stop taking the medication you permanently use without consulting your doctor).
It is recommended not to smoke for a while before and after the operation.
Do not put on any makeup, do not use hair gel, wear comfortable clothes and leave your jewels at home before coming to the hospital for operation.
Do not eat or drink anything 6 hours before the operation.
Be present at the hospital about one hour before the operation.
When you come to the room reserved for you, you may be given an oral drug if you want, it will relax you.
The facelift surgery is not scarless. However these scars are not visible because they are hidden. The scars are hidden in the hairy skin, in front of and at the back of the ears in the temporal sides. If the fats under the chin are removed, a track of 3-5 mm is left under the chin. If the eyelid and forehead lift operations are added, scars on eyelids and in the hairy skin on the forehead are left. However these scars on the face are generally invisible and can be hidden. Additional procedures (nose, eyelid etc.) can be performed in the same session.
Type of Anesthesia
General or local anesthesia can be applied with intravenous sedation (tranquilizer).
Duration of Operation
Duration of operation is about 4-6 hours.
It is possible to leave home on the same day, but you can stay in hospital for 1 night. You may have swelling, color change, numbness and tension on your face. During the operation, as facial nerves may be affected by anesthesia, slight asymmetries can be seen on the face. They go away within 3-5 days automatically. Head is put in a bandage by excluding eyes, nose and mouth. Silicone tubes called drains can be placed in order to prevent blood congestion in the tissue. The drains are removed within maximum 2 days. The bandage is completely opened 2-3 days later. General control and dressing are performed. Hair can be washed in this period. If the stitches are not dissolvable, they are removed 5-7 days later. Secondary corrections may be needed rarely. The patient can stand up and do the works at home after the 2nd day of operation. The patient can get back to work and put on makeup after one week when swelling goes away.
It is recommended to avoid from heavy exercises and sunlight and be protected from external impacts for 2 months. The newly shaped face and neck can last for 5-10 years and sometimes during a lifetime depending on the structure of the person and environmental conditions.
After the third week, you’ll notice and enjoy the new shape of your face gained by operation.
It takes its final shape 6 months-1 year after the operation.
